Nestled in the heart of Gallipoli, Ristorante Grotta Marinara offers an authentic seafood dining experience that truly captures the essence of Italian coastal cuisine. Located on Via Cesare Battisti, this charming spot invites guests into a unique vaulted basement setting, where fresh ocean flavors come alive in every meticulously prepared dish.
From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by a well-lit and airy ambiance that belies its underground location, creating an intimate yet vibrant atmosphere that's perfect for savoring the day's catch. The restaurant’s highlight is undoubtedly its impressive selection of fresh fish—which you can actually see displayed in a chilled showcase—offering diners a firsthand glimpse of the quality that defines each plate.
Dishes here are crafted with passion and precision. Signature offerings like the cozze gratinate stand out, featuring succulent mussels baked to golden perfection with a flavorful crust that delighted Beatriz Garcia and left a lasting impression. The tagliolini with gambero rosso is another culinary gem, combining tender, delicate pasta with the rich, sweet essence of red prawns, a favorite recalled fondly by David. Every plate boasts not only exquisite flavors but also an artful presentation that elevates the gastronomic experience, a detail Johan Borg especially appreciated.
Guests consistently praise the freshness of ingredients, an unmistakable hallmark of Ristorante Grotta Marinara’s commitment to quality. The menu focuses heavily on seafood, allowing the ocean's natural bounty to shine without overwhelming the palate. Regulars and newcomers alike appreciate the reasonable prices, especially considering the elevated quality and the authentic atmosphere that locals have championed time and again, as echoed by Ronald Beniers.
The service complements the stunning cuisine perfectly. Friendly and attentive staff—primarily Italian-speaking—enhance the warm, inviting environment without rushing the dining experience, making it a wonderful place to relax over an indulgent lunch or dinner. And don't miss the refreshing sorbetto to cleanse the palate and aid digestion, as recommended by Beatriz.
Whether you’re wandering through Gallipoli like Jeff O, who stumbled upon this gem by chance, or coming on a local recommendation like Johan Borg, Ristorante Grotta Marinara promises a memorable meal filled with genuine flavors and heartfelt hospitality. This is not just a meal—it’s a true taste of the sea and the spirit of Southern Italy.
For seafood lovers seeking fresh, lovingly prepared dishes in a setting that balances rustic charm with thoughtful design, Ristorante Grotta Marinara is an essential stop on any culinary itinerary in Gallipoli.

Great place for sea food. It’s located in a basement but it is really well lit and ventilated. The space is really nice and well organized. The prices are reasonable. I would recommend the cozze gratinate!! They were just amazing. And of course, a sorbetto always helps digest! Overall: great place!

Nice fresh seafood in this vaulted basement restaurant. Had a nice mixed antipasto and a tagliolini with gambero rosso. Both tasted great and service was friendly.

Superb Restaurant. Mainly fish and seafood dishes. And a large choice of fresh fish displayed in a chiller in the restaurant. Even the locals absolutely recommend the place and they are right. Prices are not over the top. Staff is friendly, although mainly italian speaking.
